History of Hill Farm

The property can be traced back to 1614 when fire destroyed the records of the Torrington Trustees who then owned Collinsdown which is now called Hill Farm.

  • 1614: The annual rent was 22 shillings and Richarde Dromant, his wife Mary and their daughter Phillipa lived here.

  • Early 1990’s: The trustees sold the property and it has been in private hands ever since

  • 1998: Bob and Mary Vickery purchased Hill Farm and 6 acres of land from Mr & Mrs Squire and went about converting the working farm into holiday cottages (Mr & Mrs Squires sold off the land to local farmers)

  • December 2014: Mark and Yvonna who moved from Berkshire to Hill Farm with their 2 young sons Ben and Harvey as an ‘escape to the country’

  • December 2018: Mick and Julie Newman took over Hill Farm Cottages and have been running them ever since. They’ve carried out extensive improvements to the cottages and pool, transforming them into the welcoming holiday retreat they are today.

Annery Kiln

Originally the farm house. This cottage had an outside staircase from the lounge leading to the bedrooms above.

Half Penny Bridge & Laundry

Formerly used to keep chickens and small livestock, this cottage retains it’s thick natural cob walls with shelving above

Swimming Pool, Games Room & Barn

The swimming pool is where Mr & Mrs Squires reared their calves, the games room is where hay used to be stored & the area where we keep our animals was kept for sheep. The garage was a workshop and tractor store.

Beam Weir

Before the cottage conversions, this was the milking parlour for the farms dairy herd.

Pebble Ridge & Landcross

These cottages were built from the hay barn & dog kennel. Landcross looks out onto common land which can be used by the people of Torrington to graze their animals.
